Philosockphy's sock of the month for August: 8 Random, Fun, and Useless Facts About Socks!

What are you doing right now? If you’re reading this, it’s likely that you’re sitting at your desk or on the couch with the laptop propped up on your thighs – or maybe even on your feet if you think typing with a screen in front of your face is more ergonomic than tucking it between your knees like I do. If you wear socks (and why wouldn’t you, since it’s August?), then perhaps you have some on now.

1) Romans are credited with wearing the first socks

Socks have been around for centuries. Romans are credited with wearing the first socks in 200 B.C. They were first worn as a status symbol to show that one had enough money to purchase material like wool, which was expensive at the time. One had to be wealthy enough to afford to wear socks, because they didn't offer much other protection against cold weather. Fast forward two thousand years later, and people are still wearing socks. We've come a long way since then—literally and figuratively speaking!

2) Kilroy was here on his sock

3) Have you ever heard someone saying 'mind your own socks'?

The sock on your right foot is the one that matches your left. So if you put your left shoe on first, then put on a sock from your right foot first and then the other sock from your left foot, then you have a better chance of finding that lost matching sock. If you are wearing socks with different colors or patterns - like dress socks with an ankle sock - this also helps in tracking down what you're looking for since that can be more difficult to do when it comes to just one color.

4) Finding your lost socks can be as simple as looking under your feet

Sometimes socks go missing in the laundry. However, finding your lost socks can be as simple as looking under your feet. If you can't find them in your laundry basket or in a hamper somewhere else in the house, just look on the floor. The chances are good that you'll find them there - either balled up or carelessly left behind by someone who was tracking dirt onto your clean floor.

5) Different country, different rules - in Sweden you have to fold your socks before washing them because they take up less room in the wash (pictured is one pair of folded tube socks!)

Socks are one of those things that you don't really think about until you need them. And even then, it's just to take them off your feet. But socks deserve some love too - they're often overlooked in favor of more glamorous items like shoes or jewelry. However, there are a lot of things you might not know about socks. For example: Did you know that in Sweden they fold their socks before washing them because it makes them take up less room? The Swedish are awesome like that! Or how about this one: In Japan there is a company called Kukka Socks where all the materials used to make their socks come from recycled cardboard tubes?

6) These three words sum up what a sock manufacturer has done in building America’s first LEED certified factory building

Sock manufacturer Philosocks is committed to building a sustainable business. To achieve this goal, it has created America’s first LEED certified factory building in Burlington North Carolina. When the company opened its doors in 2013, they had one goal: to create a world-class environment that would be environmentally friendly and provide top-quality work environments for their employees. After five years of hard work and dedication to their goal, they received LEED certification from The Green Building Council (GBC) on December 20th, 2018. This makes Philosocks just the third company in all of North Carolina to earn a GBC certification!

7) Can we wear socks without shoes?

It is possible to wear socks without shoes. You may choose to do so because your feet get too hot or you want to avoid getting dirt or other materials on your feet. If you decide to go sockless with your shoes, it is a good idea to tuck them into your socks so they don't flap around while you walk. You could also use a pair of toe covers that are designed specifically for this purpose.
