The sock of the month for September is all about blind warps!
In honor of the sock of the month club, we’re starting to share more about the processes and techniques behind how each sock gets made. Our September sock of the month, Blind Warp Socks, focuses on one of these processes – which is simply called blind warping by most knitters! Here are some interesting things you might not know about this technique...

What are blind warps?
Blind warps are a great way to add more color to your sock. It's done by weaving them in and out of the other stitches with special techniques that will make it hard to see where they are. They're perfect if you like crazy color dress socks or funky fun socks for men, but also work well in solid colors too.
Here's how you do it: There are two ways you can go about doing this, either by tying a separate length of yarn around your ankle and then weaving that into your knitting at regular intervals or by using bobbins to hold each color so they're easier to weave in.

How are they different from regular pattern repeats?
Blind weaves are a process in which yarns are woven through each other without any discernible pattern. This allows for a design with an organic and natural feel, similar to basket weaving. These socks are great gifts because they have a unique look that can't be found in regular pattern repeats.
Blind weaves require more labor to make and so they're typically much more expensive than regular socks. This means that you'll often find them in high end stores or speciality gift shops. They also won't fade as quickly as regular socks because the weave doesn't allow light to penetrate it like normal patterns do.

Why would you use them?

Blocking socks knit with this method
A different knitting technique that can be used to create an even more colorful end product are blind stitches. This method is achieved by knitting one row and purling one row, so that there's no contrast between the two sides. The result? A perfect pattern on both sides of the fabric, which makes it great for socks because you can use any color combination you want without worrying about what shows on either side.
Blind stitches are often knit using a smaller yarn than normal because if there's not much difference in appearance from side-to-side, it needs less yarn to create a contrasting design. They're also great for beginners because they don't have any real tricky parts--just keep going until you have enough length to make your socks and then stop.
