Sock Philosophizing: 5 Ways to Fold Your Socks
How you fold your socks might seem like a trivial matter, but it’s actually an important philosophical question to consider each morning as you get dressed. When you choose how to fold your socks, you’re choosing which values to prioritize – comfort and convenience, or uniformity and aesthetics? Here are five ways to fold your socks based on the value of each approach that you can decide on for yourself depending on how much time and effort you want to devote to this important matter every day.
1) The Pleated Square
The Pleated Square is a very popular sock folding method, especially with dress socks. To fold your dress socks into a pleated square, fold them in half lengthwise and then lay them down so that the two halves are overlapping. Then carefully roll the socks up into a square and tuck in any excess fabric. It's important to note that this style of folding might not work for ankle socks because there will not be enough fabric at the top of the sock to make it look neat.
1) Using your hand, pull up on the folded edge of one side of your sock until it reaches around halfway between the top and bottom edges of the sock.
2) The Triangle
The Triangle is a great way to fold your socks. All you need is a sock, an empty space, and one hand. First, put the sock on the ground with one of the legs facing up. Next, take the bottom leg of the sock and put it over the top of your hand as if you were putting on a glove. Now make a fist with that hand and reach around both legs of the sock. Lastly, grab hold of your other hand's thumb and pull down sharply until you feel resistance. The sock should now be nice and tidy in a perfect triangle shape!
3) The Sock Tetris
It's a good idea to have a few different sock folding techniques in your repertoire. It can be hard to know which one is best for you and the specific situation at hand. For example, the Tetris is an excellent choice for socks that are thicker or have really tight cuffs. It's also perfect for men who love their colorful socks, as it allows them to show off all their favorite colors without compromising the neatness of their sock drawer.
