Why wear anything at all?

If you’re spending time picking out your clothes, don’t you want them to be stylish and comfortable? What about if it takes time for your outfit to coordinate perfectly? If that sounds like a good idea but it also seems like too much work, consider getting rid of clothes altogether. With so many subscription services catering to our shoe, makeup and food cravings, there’s no reason why our sock drawer shouldn’t get some TLC as well. Enter Philosockphy, an online subscription service that provides minimalists with five new pairs of beautiful socks delivered each month. At $39 per month (after shipping) they provide wardrobe staples without forcing subscribers into matching requirements or color coordination constraints.

Philosophy – what it is about?

Formal definition or general meaning? For anyone who doesn’t know, philosophy is defined as the study of general and fundamental problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. But... how do you define philosophy in everyday life? This question has stumped philosophers since ages ago. However it was only recently that I realized there was an easy answer to defining philosophy—it can be defined by what we wear on our feet! Or at least that’s what Philosockphy socks would have us believe. So... is it true? Could wearing Philosophy socks help me redefine my own personal philosophy of life? Let’s find out!

How does it relate to socks?

Every time you open your sock drawer, they're there. It doesn't matter if you have 20 other pairs of socks in there, or if you've barely worn any of them—they're always right on top. In fact, it seems like every time you clean out your sock drawer (which probably isn't that often) your pair of colorful philosophy socks is still hanging around. Does anyone else have these? Or are you just weird? There's nothing wrong with having many pairs of socks to choose from!

What did I receive?

The monthly subscription is $19.99/month plus shipping. You can choose to order one pair, or opt for two pairs per month. Shipping is free on orders over $60 in North America, or you can pay $5 extra to upgrade your shipping options. My first package included two pairs of socks; one with little pandas and the other with colorful polka dots (you can see them pictured above). I also received a cute little card, a discount code for 20% off my next purchase, and an information sheet about their company. Not only did I receive some really comfy new socks, but I also got to support small business owners in Canada!

Is it worth the price?

So $15 is not an insignificant amount of money to spend on a pair of socks. Yet, with all of these benefits in mind, I have to ask myself if it’s worth it to spend that much. Let’s break down what you’re getting for your money here. With each pair of socks costing $15, that means you get 12 pairs per year. You then wear those pairs approximately 100 times (that’s just under once per week), which comes out to about 83 cents per wear. In other words, every time you put on one of your Philosockophy socks, you get roughly 83 cents worth of happiness from them – assuming they last as long as advertised! Is that worth $15?
