5 Fun Ways to Fold Your Socks

You might not realize it, but your socks tell more about you than you might realize. From the thread count of the material to the way they’re patterned, your socks can say quite a bit about you and your personality. That’s why we’ve partnered with sock of the month Club to bring you these five great ways to fold your socks so that your personality shines through in every pair.

1) The Basic Roll

This might be one of my favorite sock-folding methods. It's pretty straightforward, and it has a unique look that will make you stand out in a crowd. Plus, it's super easy to teach your kids how to do it! Just line up your socks in an alternating pattern (one right side up, one upside down), then roll 'em up. Just be sure that they're facing a different direction (up or down) every time so they all come out looking great. I've actually never seen anyone with cool socks fold their socks like this—you should probably tell them about it!

2) The Over Under

If you want to be neat and organized, your socks should face a specific direction in your sock drawer or dresser. The sock drawer and sock slots are divided into two compartments. The left compartment is for storing non-matching socks with even numbers (1, 3, 5), while odd numbers (2, 4) go on your right. Place a tissue paper between each pair of socks to keep them from clumping together and help them stay neat. The same method can be used for boxes that contain socks from sock subscriptions or from stores such as Kohl’s, Target or Walgreens. Make sure you store all of your favorite cool socks in easy reach so you don’t have to hunt for them when it comes time to get dressed!

3) The Knee Highs

You’re an important person who does many important things in your day, but when it comes to socks, you should treat yourself with a little more care. After all, if you’re getting a foot massage at work or enjoying some casual time at home, your feet deserve quality socks. Some people prefer ankle socks that reach up near their knees and others go with booties—there are even sock of the month clubs that send subscribers high-quality pairs (and a free pair just for signing up!). No matter what kind of sock fit you prefer, make sure your favorite pair is folded properly so they can maintain their quality and last longer. Folding socks may seem like an unimportant task, but take care of them as best you can.

4) The Over Easy

On a bed or table, face down, begin folding your socks in half lengthwise. Grasp each sock halfway through and stretch them both out fully. Now, fold those two halves together lengthwise—you should have a small rectangle of material with a lot of stretch. Once you’ve got your rectangle folded lengthwise twice, you’ll be left with two loose flaps of material: one on top and one on bottom. At this point, pinch both flaps and fold them into themselves until they meet at the center of your rectangle and everything is nice and neat—just like your socks should be. It may take some practice to get it just right, but before long you’ll be folding your socks like a pro!

5) The Double Roll

This is a great way to make your socks last longer. Take two pairs of socks, one inside of another, and place them on a flat surface with both pairs together. Roll them together by twisting clockwise then counterclockwise. Once you’ve done that, flatten out all four layers of socks in your hand and roll clockwise then counterclockwise again until you have one tight roll. The idea here is that if you fold them in half and roll them into a cylinder shape like most people do, when you put on your shoes or walk down stairs, it can cause friction and thin out parts of your socks causing holes over time. Rolling each pair separately keeps everything intact for as long as possible! This also works well for tights.
