10 Genius Ways to Fold Your Socks

In today’s age of technology, if you want to keep your feet stylish, warm, and cozy all year round, sock subscriptions are the way to go. But what if you don’t have time to hunt down the perfect pair of socks each month? Then you need one of these fantastic sock folding techniques! Learn how to fold your socks like an expert with this guide from our resident sock expert, Catherine Smith from Sock Co-op. She’ll tell you everything you need to know about the best ways to fold and store your socks so they can last as long as possible!

1) Shop for socks online

If you’re looking for cool socks or socks subscriptions and want a little bit of fun, look online. Sites like Bombas, Undieguys, and Stance have a great selection—plus things like sock of the month clubs and other fun extras. If you love cute packages and excitement, it’s hard to go wrong with an online subscription. (If shopping from home isn’t your thing, many sites offer in-store pickup.) Or if you prefer your sock hunting done in person, there are lots of physical stores that carry awesome socks. If nothing else, check out local boutiques where someone will help you find exactly what you need!

2) Join a sock of the month club

The problem with storing socks in a drawer is that they are extremely likely to get tangled and deformed. But what if you were given a new cool pair of socks every month? That’s exactly what some sock of the month clubs do: Instead of giving you an undifferentiated pile of socks, they deliver themed pairs in pretty packaging (they also tend to come with extras like handkerchiefs and soaps). If you love cool socks but hate having them crumple at the bottom of your sock drawer, it’s time for a sock club membership. Check out companies like Bombas and Uniqso for membership options.

3) Go sock subscription crazy

If you’re serious about making sock folding easier, consider signing up for a sock of the month club. This is a fun way to keep your socks in tip-top shape and prevent them from building up over time. Plus, having new, fresh socks show up on your doorstep every month is always a good feeling. There are plenty of options out there if you’re interested—just be sure that they don’t include any plastic packaging and don’t use air shipping methods that damage your socks! Otherwise, you might as well just throw them all in a pile with one another—and no one wants that. (Except maybe your partner.)

4) Think outside the box

The old way of folding socks is so last year. We scoured Pinterest for some creative ways you can fold your socks, and guess what? They’re all pretty cool. Check out these 10 genius ways to fold your socks

5) Include some funky socks in your everyday wardrobe

This might sound obvious, but if you’re cool socks are always packed away in a dresser drawer somewhere, it’s probably not helping your funky game. Instead, consider folding them and keeping them on top of your dresser or in a special sock container. Or why not wear your funky socks more regularly? If you’re trying to brighten up some boring work attire, nothing gets attention like an eye-catching pattern. Plus, as worn-out, mismatched socks are associated with sloppiness—no one will see you coming with clean (and good-looking) footwear.

6) Go sock subscription crazy – part II

The second in a series on how I organise my sock drawer (see earlier post: Go sock subscription crazy). If you don’t want to be inundated with unending supply of socks, then go through your current pile and put pairs that match together, then put them back into your drawers. This way every time you take out a pair it will be matching up with another one. And bonus points if they are separated by type of use – athletic socks, dress socks and so on. Also, I think it’s nice to keep black socks separate from all other colours and patterns since those always seem to get lost or mixed up in my drawers!

7) Stock up on multipacks

It's easy to forget that you have enough socks. After all, you wear them every day and they always seem like one of those things that will never run out (hint: they do). Invest in some multipacks so that you'll always have a fresh pair available. They're also a great way to keep things nice and organized; get multiple packs in different colors and fold them accordingly so that your sock drawer is nice and neat. You'll be able to pull out a clean pair of socks every morning!

8) Organize your drawer by colors and textures.

If you’re like most people, your socks drawer has become a chaotic mess. To keep things neat and make sure your socks are easily accessible, separate them by textures and colors. Keep dressy or brightly colored socks in one place and make another spot for athletic socks. You can also use color-coded baskets for different drawers—matching is optional! This trick will help you match clothes quicker, too. A dual-purpose tip! It also helps to group together similar sizes (sock style and height). Putting everything together will allow you to quickly find what you’re looking for when it’s time to dress up (or get fit). Don't have enough socks? Check out these 20 fun alternatives!

9) Color code your socks.

There’s an easy way to sort your socks and prevent matching disasters—and it’s by color. Label each sock with a colored strip of tape or masking tape, and then fold into sets (or pack in a small bin) with those colors together. This is also helpful for whites (you can even toss them in together), bras, and underwear, or for anything else that needs sorting but doesn’t necessarily have a natural order. As you pick up new items during your laundry cycle, check their tags before tossing them into the baskets, so you know how they should be folded when it comes time to put them away again.

10) Create cool sock display.

Instead of folding your socks and putting them in a drawer, try using an old picture frame as a makeshift sock holder. Stow any pair you’re not wearing in there, and then when you get dressed, take them out one at a time, just like old times. It’s hard to argue with a system that puts an interesting decorative element on your wall while making it easier for you to find your socks in the morning. The great thing about reusing a picture frame is that it doesn’t have to be boring; if you're handy with paint or scrapbooking supplies, add some fun flair (and extra storage space) by painting each frame a different color!
